A large feeling has arrived, love or fury, at a strength the system has no permission to accommodate. The alarm is not about the object of the feeling but about its size: an old ruling forbids intensity of any kind, so the surge and the prohibition meet in the chest and burn there. The household that issued the ruling ran on denial, where strong feeling was an embarrassment or a threat. What the shape asks for is the feeling given room at its actual volume, somewhere it will not cost anything.

Whatever this is, it's too much of it — and I was raised to keep the volume at three.

Semele, who asked to meet the god at full strength and was not built to withstand the answer. The form implies a task: to build the capacity rather than to keep refusing the encounter.
