It runs as the body's memory of the earliest deprivation, a nurture that failed to arrive because the mother had no reserve of it to pass on, having been starved of it herself. What is left is a deep failure to thrive, a sense that sustenance is not for one. This is a grave pattern, and where it is live its care belongs with someone trained to help. What it asks for is to receive, now, in small amounts, what did not come then.

The first care didn't reach me, because the one meant to give it had never been given it either.

Demophon, the infant a goddess held to the fire each night to make him deathless, until the rite was broken off and the gift never completed, the nurture that would have sustained him cut short. The form implies a task: to let the interrupted feeding be resumed by other hands.
