Salt is reached for at the tongue because savour has been removed everywhere else: a person who has kept themselves bland and unfeeling as a survival measure needs something sharp enough to register. The blandness was manufactured in a household where feeling was suppressed and the atmosphere carried real danger, so the fear underneath is not of embarrassment but of being wiped out. What it asks for is one true reaction let out at ordinary volume, in a place that is genuinely safe.

Everything I say comes out plain. Then I salt my food until it stings.

Cordelia, whose plain measure of love — salt rather than honey — was heard as insufficient and cost her everything. The task the form implies is speaking the unadorned truth again in a room that will not punish it.
