It holds a settled and unbothered conviction that there is nothing behind any of it, and the conviction quietly withdraws effort from everything that would need effort in order to grow, plenty and the upkeep of a body included. Nobody at home was cruel, which is the point: an indifferent family produced an early and entirely reasonable inference that the wider arrangement is indifferent as well. What it asks for is to test that inference against one instance in which something did in fact respond.

Nothing rises. I stopped expecting it to a long time ago.

It echoes Qoheleth, who tried building, planting, wealth and wisdom in turn, weighed each of them in his hand, and set them all down as vapour. The form implies a task: to notice that the weighing was done by somebody nobody was answering.
