It sets its own course with real confidence and does not price in what the course costs anybody downstream, whether that is a person, a workplace or a stretch of land. The blindness is trained rather than cruel: it grew up among people who did not track their effect on one another either, so the question of consequence was never once raised at that table. What it asks for is to follow one decision the whole way to the person standing at the far end of it.

It echoes Lemminkainen, who went where he was warned not to go, took what he liked from every house he entered, and left his mother to gather up what was left of him afterwards. The form implies a task: to look behind once, at what was still standing.
