It puts down its own power, its desire and its access to plenty in a steady act of self-disarmament, on the conviction that a person made this way should not be given range. The verdict was issued at home by an engulfing and furious mother, and the attachment to her survived the verdict, so the sentence goes on being served in her absence. What it asks for is to hold one ordinary piece of power for a week without the penance that usually accompanies it.

It echoes Set, cast in the family story as the ruinous one and kept in the account because the account required somebody to carry that part. The form implies a task: to ask who assigned the role, and what the household needed it for.
