It answers every approach with work, meeting affection, desire and tenderness with the observation that there are things to be got on with, so the duty steadily crowds out the register in which somebody could be received. Consistent maternal deprivation put it into an adult role while it was still a child, and a person who became necessary before they were wanted has no working experience of being loved for anything other than the labour. What it asks for is one hour in which the work is left undone and the affection is what is attended to instead.

It echoes Antigone, who gave the whole of herself to an obligation toward the dead and said plainly, on the way, that there would now be no wedding and no household of her own. The form implies a task: to count what the obligation is being paid for with.
